MP4 not importing correctly

I recently downloaded a video I recorded from YouTube and every time I import it, it will come up with an error. I click 'relink' to try and fix it but it will only import the audio and not the visual. The file I'm trying to import is an mp4 and this is the first time this has happened. Any ideas what the issue is?

  • What did you use to download it from YouTube?

I use 4K Video Downloader and those files play fine in Hitfilm.

  • "The file I'm trying to import is an mp4..."

MP4 does not mean anything. What matters is the exact video codec used in the media. A full text MediaInfo report will tell us everything.

For the most part Youtube stuff should always be AVC/H.264 video 8-bit 420 and that should import into Hitfilm. Some content might be in VP9 which will not import. That media will need to be transcoded to something Hitfilm handle like AVC or Cineform or DNxHD/HR.

  • +1 to transcoding anything from YouTube.  Even though the download should work fine, I prefer to avoid potential problems and always give HitFilm something it likes.

  • The codec is exactly the same as said above and it is the same as my other files that import fine with no issues at all

  • OK, glad you solved your problem.

  • @Mattj886 MP4 is a container, not a codec. Even though the MP4 container spec limits the codecs allowed, there can be more than one and there's nothing preventing some software like a Youtube downloader from producing an out of spec file. Saying it's an MP4 is like saying water is wet. It's just not enough information for anybody to give a solid solution. That's why the people on here trying to help always ask for a MediaInfo report. That has a lot more of the information required to pinpoint a solution.

  • How would you get the full MediaInfo report?

  • Install MediaInfo.  Drop your file onto it.  Switch the view to text mode (the third button in the toolbar, at least in my version).  Copy the text from that and paste it in a reply here.

  • @Matt886 Your download has a variable frame rate with an odd target rate of 29.917 fps. My guess is since the target frame rate doesn't match any standard frame rate HitFilm doesn't know what to do and chokes on the video. Follow @NormanPCN 's steps for Handbrake to convert to a constant 29.97 fps in his thread and you should be good to go.

  • @Aladdin4d Thank you for the information
