Possible Import File Size Limit?

edited November 2017 in Express Support

So I was going to start doing some editing when I noticed that any time I tried to import an MP4 that was around, 1.7GB it would respond. I left the program on its own for a good half hour, came back and it wasn't responding. Is it that my computer's too weak to handle this much?

For the sake of not needing to ask here are my specs:

32GB of RAM.

AMD RX 480 Graphics Card

Edit: Problem self worked out.

  • I have imported 13GB AVC/AAC/MP4 files. Constant frame rate.

You mentioned no specifics about your media file contents. I would guess it is an AVC/H.264 file with AAC audio. The media is probably Variable frame rate (VFR) as well. A full text MediaInfo report will let us know the details (free utility).

While Hitfilm 2017 can handle VFR it does cause extra application overhead, especially on import, and there can be some quality hiccups, and maybe an import VFR frame rate analysis problem where is never finishes (stalls).

Also, when editing files that big you are probably going to want to turn the audio waveform off on the NLE timeline. This can cause slowdowns. Especially with AAC/MP3 audio. Actually the size does not matter but the length in time that matters.

  • I guess I did forget that, pardon me. I think I got the full text dumb here:

Okay at least you are constant frame rate. Check that one off.

The media file is 4 hours long. Ouch.

What is your project audio sample rate. Hitfilm defaults to 48Khz. Your media is 44.1Khz. Hitfilm resamples the audio from media to project frame rate on import when they differ. That is one item HF saves in it's "cache". If you make your project audio sample rate the same as media, 44.1 in this case, then Hitfilm will not perform this resample on import.

That's call I can think of right now.

With 4 hour media, I think you will really want to disable audio waveforms as previously mentioned.
