What the hell did I do differently this week! Vegas is reporting a 6 hour render!... Probably because so much of this one is in fast or slow motion... All the time remapping.... Chances are for Youtube a 2-pass VBR is overkill anyway (on a 35 mbps master Youtube will chop down to 8? yeah!) and I can cut render times in half by doing single pass....
So I'll just abort the current render and do that!
@Triem23 I had a handful of comments on the video say things like, "I am going to subscribe to all of them now." Also, I had one person say, " Didn't know about Hitfilm Uni so thanks for that." Hopefully, it helps!

Wow washing up the dishes never been so much fun... some neat little tricks here that I just did not know or just did not use. E.g. moving media to the layer stack I always find myself having to move it back to the start because I drag it onto the layer, not anymore, Ill drag it to the left and hopefully it will now always be at the start - thanks. I also liked the way you explained grade layers, that is so much clearer now. Oh and the way hitfilm does things in an order dependant on where you are, that clears up a couple of mysteries that I had. Thanks for creating and sharing.
One little note, you seem to have some back ground music or sound track playing and it kind of sounds to me a bit like a scfi engine noise, sometimes it's distracting.

Reminds me of some sort of sonar device from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but that may just be because of the talk about that show lately. Yes, is it distracting. Take @Aiden 's advice and ....use a better song.
@Palacono @Andy001z yeah, I rushed this week at the end and had the BG music 8dB higher than I normally mix it. It's actually the same music in every episode. Because I'm a bit anal*, that particular piece of music stays for the rest of the series (Essential Hitfilm is slated for 13 episodes). But next week I'll put it back at -40dB from this week's -32dB.
Then I'll find a different song for "Mastering Hitfilm**" - - series 2.
Andy, I didn't know dragging to the layer stack defaulted the media to frame 0 either. I'm pleased that I too am learning new things every week.
*Also lazy. Each episode has taken between 12-20+*** hours to produce, so, I can spend my time doing the tutorial, or I can browse stock music.
**Mastering will be where we get into Models, Particles and other Pro-Only features.
***This Composite Shots episode took forever! I tried a different workflow method and it was a total failure! Although, oddly enough, it IS the proper workflow for this week's episode. Only this week's. Blending Modes doesn't require watching the interface a lot. Bunch of stills and a lot of talking....
Actually the 'sonar beeps' have been distracting from the first episode at any volume, just didn't mention it before because lots of things bother me. Loving the retro vibe on the intro though, reminds me of something from the 70s/80s; just can't put my finger on it.
@Triem23 well loving it sound or no sound, I had noticed them before but figured it was just personal taste. Actually come to think of it I don't recall the music it's not all on the right channel is it, being deaf in my right I only have one ear bud in.

20+hrs that's why I stick to putting up vids when I can, I just can't commit that kind of time each week. Mind you if I cut the youtube tutorial watching down I might get more done (wink).
Had you considered at the start of the video doing a bunch of click here boxes to reference key parts of the video. I know first time I watch them all but repeat I will jump to the sections and yey I know you have nicely listed them all out in the comment but just an idea.
@Andy001z I did, but max four boxes at once, 30-50 segments, 10 seconds a screen for 8-12 screens and we waste a lot of time each episode (and it would take forever to set up), but, I've learned that the timecodes in the description are timecode links! That's why they're blue! So you can actually click the list to navigate, and I think that's good enough! Music is in both channels.
Only Ep5 was over 20 hours. Median is about 12. Dove in on the deep end with long-form right away with only the guest tutorials for FXHOME as a warm up... Still refining things. :-)

@Triem23 Wow! Finished the latest and the Motion Blur section was absolute GOLD. I have never messed around there with the setting because I had no clue what they all meant, but your coverage helped a lot. I know Ill have to refer back to some of it though especially 26 min to 32 the compositing and 2D, 3D and Unrolled. I didn't quite catch all of that the first go not because of your explanation but my 'denseness.' Thanks again for taking on this enormous task.
@Triem23 I have to second @tddavis. You are doing such a good job with these tutorials! They are extremely comprehensive. The time spent is turning dividends. I've notice that you can now respond to questions with the tutorial and timecode location that answers the question.
A lot of work upfront, but once you've got a library of details built, it's a lot easier to answer the same question over and over . . . .
Why have a live band when you can play records instead?
Why go to the theatre when you can watch a DVD instead?
Why type lengthy explanations when you can just type "go watch this tutorial by HitFilm University/Mike Miller/Triem23/Lord Of All Knowledge" instead?

@Triem23 Very useful tutorial, as usual. I have cycled through the different blend modes looking for just that right look as I was searching for before with no idea what was going on at all, but this helped me grasp a few of the concepts (my fault, not the information's.) I found the comment about the divide mode and removing an overcolored clip very helpful indeed. I've done something similar to that with PS and one of the effects I can't recall at the moment that averages a layer with the inverse color, or something like that. Never knew it could be applied this way to video, so thanks tremendously for that bit of wisdom!

You don't need to export from GoPro Studio if all you're doing is exporting Cineform .Avi files, as that's what it's already done when you transcoded it for the editor in stage one. It's also a waste of time first transcoding to Medium then exporting to High; you can't add data already lost. You can do colour correction in the editor and just exit the program without exporting. The LUT will be associated with the original .Avi file. You can then open that in Hitfilm etc. Keep the file open in GoPro Studio as well and colour corrections affect the LUT which is reflected in your other editors. Hitfilm sometimes needs you to wiggle things about a bit to recognise this, but it does work.
@Palacono I'll trust you on this. However, GoPro studio wasn't having my step one file appear in my file browser. The only way I was able to get GoPro studio to give me a file was to do the steps as presented.
Doesn't mean I didn't do something wrong. :-)
To be honest, other than Handbrake (and Vegas, of course), I'd never usee any of this other software to transcode before this week. Why would I? Vegas will cheerfully export h.264, Cineform, DNxHD and ProRes, and extract multiple audio clips, singly, or in batches. :-) I get to delete the rest of these superfluous programs now and reclaim some disc space! ;-)
Are you on a PC or Mac? The AVI files are in the first folder you told it to put them in during stage one. They're not (supposed to be) hidden. @Triem23 Edit: OK, I watched that bit of the video again and see where it went awry. You added the file to the list before you changed the destination directory. So it's transcoding the files to C:/Users/User/Desktop, not the one you then selected. Had you dragged another copy over after you did that, then it would have gone where you wanted. Depending on how many times you attempted this, it usually remembers the destination folder, so next time, it would have got it right the first time.Or, if you'd selected the clip in the Conversion List first and then changed the path, it would have updated it and said "Updating Clip in Conversion List" in the blue box next to the filename/path. Basically go into the Advanced Settings etc. before you add it to the list. You can Right Click it there afterwards too, then select 'Reveal in Explorer' to see where it went if in doubt.So the quick version is: Advanced Settings, Path, Add file(s) to List, Convert....and you're done. Exit program. It pretty much works like the Hitfilm Render queue.People making tutorials about products they don't know how to use....what's all that about? I hear you anyway. As I don't have HFP2017, if I want something transcoded to Cineform 4:4:4 etc. from Hitfilm 4 Express or Hitfilm 3 Pro, I used to use the integration with Sony Movie Studio 12/13 - now switched over to Magix Vegas Studio 14 - drag the Hitfilm File Project file directly into MVS14 and export from that. It's nice the integration still works with Magix; it's pretty much the perfect combination at the right price.
