TDDavis' Li'l Projects thread - Rendering Fire in Eevee with transparency- 7/19/2020

  • Nice! Free education!...Thanks Terry 👍

Just in case I don't pull something together before Hallowe'en, I wanted to show off this one shot...Of course, as with all of us, I am not 100% happy with it...yet.

I textured it up a bit and made it burst into flames in Blender and exported as a PNG sequence which I compliled in Hitfilm 13.1 Pro.

  • That is really neat. :)

I am not at all happy with this years presentation.  I decided last minute to even do one after @Graymotion and @FilmSensei live streamed about the skeleton model about 2 weeks ago, and I I just flat ran out of time to tweak it to where I envisioned it.  I also never got my Doctor Strange appearance cutaways filmed for inclusion because I spent so much time trying to sort Eevee and it's transparency issues (I tried every trick I could find but nothing seemed to work.)  The gate and fence stuff had to be done in cycles which was a time-killer and you can really tell the difference from the end stuff in Eevee.  The fire was a problem in Eevee as well because you can't use the Transparency for the background in that and rendering with all black caused problems in shadows when Demult or  Luminence keying. Apologies to all.

  • @tddavis It's always about learning... no apologies necessary! :)

    Happy Halloween!

  • @tddavis

    That was a TREAT. :-)

  • Thank you both for being kind and generous with your time

  • @spydurhank ; Thanks you, too.  Now that I'm not under the gun I can devote some time to the latest Filmer goodies :)

  • 👍 - I dunno Terry...I'd say you did just fine and no need for apologies. Thanks for the treat!

  • I enjoyed it!.

Hey, I didn't even get mine finished!

  • So, I love to punish myself...I guess, and I went to fiddling aroubd with the gate and fence assets in Eevee some more and found there was something in the node setup that imported with FBX file that Eevee did not like.  After I deleted it all and set one up from a tutorial on Eevee and Alpha pngs files I got it to work properly.  Now, if I can just work out fire and alpha in Eevee!  All the while making progress through @FilmSensei ; 's new Udemy course on Hitfilm.  Good stuff... There's so much in Hitfilm that I have never messed with cause I'm dumb and his course showing them and why is a huge eye-opener.

  • Thanks Terry for your very kind words!

  • @Triem23 ; Related to your recent post in another thread, I've been thinking about upgrading my NVidia 1060 6GB to either a 1660 Super :

    or a 2060 Super:

I was wondering if you had any recommendation on which would be the better upgrade from my current 1060 at the best price differential.  I know next to nothing about benchmarks and specs and often times buy on a whim and budget considerations instead of logical, reasoned specs. :)

  •  I had never heard of the cyrptomatte feature in Blender 2.8 until earlier today and now here is the 2nd tutorial popping up on my Youtube.  It's basically pretty much the same info as the one I put into @GrayMotion 's thread but there is a bit more technical info in this one, I think:

Had a little play around with this wonderful free model @Stargazer54 FlyingBanana78 linked to in another thread.  I haven't had the chance to follow the tutorial yet but the rig is super intuitive and by far the easiest to play with.  Woke up in a coughing fit from this darn sinus infection at 2 am and managed to do this and get it rendering pretty quick then feel asleep in the recliner :)

  •  @tddavis Not sure I'm the one who posted the link but that looks pretty darn good!   Love the backlit peach fuzz on the head.

@Stargazer54 ; Mea culpa,  sir.  My faulty memory got me. .. It was @FlyingBanana78 who I should have tagged but I went over to my thread and promptly forgot who I should. :)

BTW, I had nothing to do with the fuzz or anything there except the animator movement.  It's straight out the box so to speak.  I went and patreoned this guy cause his work is fantastic and free.

  •  @tddavis no worries on the tagging, but yeah I was kind of amazed at the quality especially for a freebie. Glad you liked it.

  • Well, I barely squeaked in under the wire.  There are a few places that I would have liked to have gone better (of course) but here it is for this year:

    Here's the credit info:

    or his YouTube here:

and he has a Patreon page here:

and to FlyingBanana78 at FxHome Forum for alerting to its existence, and to GrayMotion as well for the tutorial on creating a particle Christmas tree that I surely screwed up.

What Child Is This* - Christmas piano instrumental Kaleb Brasee Soloist

    * Because, after all, Baby Yoda is only referred to as “The Child” on The Mandalorian, but that little rig test video I posted a couple of weeks ago has sure been getting some plays.  It's the fastest climbing video I've ever posted.

  • @FilmSensei

Jay, here is what I managed with your tutorial series.  Don't hate me because I made it look so sucky:

Against your caution, I went ahead and used an 8K map of Mars from Nasa that I then converted in GIMP to a BUMP, Specular & Normal map. I did have the ORB plugin stop responding a couple of times but I just hit save and closed it and restarted. Had the most trouble trying to figure out where the "blue haze" layer came from in the Part 3  :) tutorial but then realized I had not opened the Earth texture zip since I was doing my own "thang." Opened it and viola! Adjusted it with GIMP to a red hue and good to go. System FX-8350 CPU, 1060 6GB NVidia GPU and 32 GB ram - total processing was 1 hour 16 minutes.

One of these years, Terry, you'll stop putting yourself down and realize you're a lot better than you think you are.

@Triem23 ; Thanks, I needed that or as we used to say back in the 70s, 'Whip me, beat me, call me women's names.'  Never knew where that came from but it was a thing around these parts anyway.

  • @tddavis Wow! That looks great!

    Thanks Court. :)

@spydurhank ; That's funny right there.  I was confused by the link before but saw you had edited the post so I figured your comment was a work in progress :)

  • Yeah Terry, I'm not a very good computer guy... or am I? :)

Court made the gif for me. :)

  • @spydurhank ; Well, thank her for me, Frank.
