Chromanator Tutorials: Grading & Effects

Disguising faces

In documentary work it is often important to disguise the faces of people in the shot, for legal reasons. This is easy to accomplish using Chromanator.

First place two identical copies of the clip in question onto the timeline, one above the other.

Now select the top clip and switch to the Object View and choose the Key -> Garbage Matte toolset.

Draw a mask shape around the object in question (in this case, the actor's face) and close it by dragging the last point onto the first.

Lock the mask by switching to the Animate mode.

  • Adding a small feather can make the blur look less harsh.
  • Switch the Invert Matte On, so that everything is excluded except the face.

Animate the mask as required so that it tracks the subject. Unless the object is moving very fast, you should not need to place too many keyframes.

Now change to the Effects toolset and choose the Box Blur RGBA tool.

  • Apply the required amount of blur.
  • Blurring it too much can result in the face underneath becoming clear again!
