Chromanator Tutorials: Masks

Introduction to masks

Chromanator features a powerful masking system that can be used to make your composited elements interact with each other and help give the illusion of depth. Masks are used when you want some objects to pass behind parts of others, or interact directly with each other.

You may also be aware of the garbage mattes, which are similar but perform a different function:

  • Garbage mattes should be used to key the image, when you are removing a greenscreen for example. They can be used to tidy up the keying if the automatic tools such as Colour Difference need some assistance. Every media object has an internal garbage matte.
  • Masks are used can be placed on the timeline like any other object and can be attached to as many objects as needed.

Each mask can consist of 20 ‘sections', each of which can have over 100 control points. This enables you to construct very detailed masking systems, giving you immense flexibility. Check the other tutorials for examples of using the mask and garbage matte systems.
