Cross-fade

A special effects shot in a movie is often made up of several different elements. Each of these layers, from the original live action to the various effects shots and filters, need to be somehow put together to form a single cohesive shot. This is called compositing, the result of which is a 'composite'. There are many techniques for compositing.
