It's an ordinary summer morning for Jack...or so it seems...

Secretly, from across the street, a suited man takes aim at Jack as he drowsily makes breakfast. With his hands clasping the rifle in the cool morning light, he lowers his head to the scope.

Coldly, and without hesitation, he fires.

'Summertime Killer' tells the story of a confrontation between two hitmen, one of whom has been betrayed the previous day.

It was shot on a Panasonic NV GS500, edited on Sony Vegas Movie Studio with all special effects and grading done in compositelab Pro and effectlab DV

The movie was pretty good and entertaining over all.

I liked the look of the sniper scope, really nice fake blood looked very real, and I loved the knife scene, really good 3d there and I liked the DOF on the knife shot. A lot of the comedy was good and natural and didnt sound out of place. Good actors

I DID NOT see that ending comming. Loved the credits very awesome

The problems I have with the movie though are:

In most of the shots the actors are in the middle of the screen, try to stick to the right or left mostly.

I didnt really like the rewind part maybe cause it was in black&white, but I loved the black&white part at 14:35.

Some of the shots are just WAY to long most notably when the guy gets shot in the neck and is coughing on the floor, try to break it up with some upclose shots and more creative angles.

The conversation they had about being friends and stuff bugged me because every time you cut to the other person the camera was in the same exact place. And they actors were in the middle of the screen.

In a lot of the shots there is too much head space or just to much empty space. Like when the long haired guy was coughing on the floor, he was at the very bottom of the screen and there was tons of space above him.

Also most of the shots were almost all medium shots, close ups imo are a must.

The main hitman (not the shot one) also came off as a little bi-poler

Well thats pretty much everything I didnt skip anything so thats a good sign...

Sure, there were quite a few technical issues that could have been done better; the frame composition, converging lines, color cheme, the ambient sound (or nat-sound) was muted in some scenes, and the pacing was really slow in some of the beginning, as well as certain shots being totally out of place. BUT--this was exceptionally entertaining and well acted. Many of the effects were GREAT. The wafting smoke, the knife, etc. I gave this 5 STARS because in my opinion, the entertaining, and "fun to watch" factor far outweigh any technical problems. What may be seen as technical problems to one person can be another person's artistic composition. Well done guys. I think the dialogue was GREAT, and that's usually where amateur films faulter.

@ RebornProductions:
Thanks for your support! I'm glad the ending surprised you, it seems to surprise everytime

I will agree that the composition of the shots was a little off, but i did not have a very experienced cameraman. I still think his work was great for a first attempt though. And i agree, we needed more close-ups. However, our tight scheduele meant we only had time for 'the basic' shots.

I played him myself...it sure was enjoyable!

@trevinator13:
Wow, thanks! Indeed, there were some great technical issues, mostly due to our rushed scheduele (Kitchen's can't be blood-filled forever unfortunately...) but i'm glad you thought the entertainment factor outweighed the production values

I was very pleased with the smoke and the knife too. Good to see my hard work payed off!

Lastly, about the script, thank you, i was cautious about writing this as i thought it miht be too cliché or too light-hearted. I've gotten very good feedback so far though

Please keep your comments/reviews coming!

I just watched it. It is very obvious that the movie is far from perfect. But I still really enjoyed it. One reason why I really liked it was because it was NOT cheesy! I also thought that your special effects like the muzzle flashes, knife throw, and cigarette smoke came off perfectly. And even though the whole movie seemed to have a bit too much green tint to it, I thought that the grading was good all around.

Although what I didn't like about the movie has pretty much already been addressed by other FXhomers, I'll tell them to you anyways. The first thing was that some of the shots were too long and some were even a little shaky (the shot of the clock). I know you said that you didn't have much time to film but I wished that there were some more close-ups. One major thing that kind of bugged me though was that I got lost in what you guys were talking about so I had to rewind the movie. And then there were the issues with the sound. Were you using the built-in camera mic?

My advice for your next movie is that you try to find more time to film more angles and that you get at least an external mic. Does your camcorder have a mic input on it?

I gave this 4/5 because I thought that this was a very solid amateur film with some great technicals and believable acting.

I look forward to your future projects.

This movie was great. Really good dialog. The whole movie was almost dialog, but it was really interesting. The dialog "flows". The knife was really well done. So was the fake smoking. The grading was alright, but it varies too much. the end credit was cool. 4/5.
PS: How does a guy get sniped in the neck and not die?

Thanks again for your comments!

@ FreshMentos:
It's good to hear it's not cheesy! And i'm glad you liked the effects:)

We did you an external mic, but for some reason, everytime you move the camera, you get these loud bassy booms. It gets real annoying because they often appear over dialogue so you can't simply quieten down the audio during the booms.

The mic was also unfortunately Mono

@ RodyPolis:
Lots of people seem to like the dialogue, very Tarantino-esque.

P.S. The bullet merely slashed his artery. There would be lots of blood, but since Jack keeps his hands pressed tightly over the wound, he wouldn't die immediately.

THIS WAS EXCELLENT!

I really enjoyed this film. The Storyline was great, dialog was awesome. And I really LOVED the knife scene. You should show me how to do that.

I gave it a perfect score.

NICE!!!

Yay! I'm teetering on the precipis of 300 downloads. I shall once again make a plea for comments. This film won't be in 2nd on the charts forever (lest it be as successful as 'A Hard Day's Night') so i'd like to pump you for comments, reviews and questions.

Have your say!

The first minutes, during the opening credits, I thought to myself "Oh, this is could be really good!". The closeup shots of the clock are nicely shot, nicely framed, good feel for colors and light and just using the ticking of the clock was good sounddesign. But then it goes downhill.

First off, the music that tunes in when the guy wakes up is an unbeatable contestant for this years worst music choice award. Firstly, it's a terrible tune, secondly, it has no musical connection whatsoever to what happens visually, thirdly, it is a complete break with the intro sounddesign, and... it's a terrible tune. I have no idea what made you chose this.

As mentioned before, the sense for decoupage is not there yet. Some entirely unnecessary stuff seems to take ages (what's up with showing 12 shots of the guy coughing on the floor?)

The dialogue and acting on the other hand, as mentioned also, is pretty cool. I liked what you did there. There's the typical age problem again, but apart from that, this is the most solid part of the production.
The knife shot was also very cool! I liked that. Too slow, as the rest of the film generally, but indeed highly cool.

The film really suffers most from weird decoupage, some odd "artistic decisions" and some less then solid technicals.

It's a solid 3 for me that could have been a 4 or even a 5 if it wasn't for the the negative points I've already meentioned. You've got talent, but you really need to check every editing and sound decision you make and decide if there's actually a reasoning for it. And then check if it's a GOOD one.

Good luck on your next film.

I'm glad you liked the opening, Sollthar, since i was a little worried about it being too slow.

I tried out many different tracks for the opening sequence. 'Popcorn' is a very recognisable tune that people wouldn't normally associate with getting up. This version, by Kraftwerk, is a slightly more energetic take on it. The fact that you didn't like it is mostly down to personal preference...but i can't expect everyone to like it.

There were only 3 shots of the guy coughing, plus one pan out to the hallway.

Good to get positive feedback on the script and acting and i'm glad that someone of your expertees was impressed by my knife.

Thanks for your feedback, Sollthar. As one of the more experienced and respected members of the community, i appreciate your comments more...it's just a shame i wasn't able to completely saticfy you

Anybody else wish to contribute?
