Newest music video. Shot in Phoenix in a single day. $1,500 equipment/production budget.

Shot on a Sony-EX1 with a redrock Encore 35mm adapter and Nikkor primes (Including a 200mm)

I lit/shot/directed/edited and colour graded. Luckily I had a 3 man crew this time.

I had to work within the confines of the Record labels concept, which was a guy who's life is falling apart changing his ways.

Forewarning: If you don't like hard rock or rapid camera movement, It's not likely you'll want to watch.

Heh, that singer sounds like he listens to A LOT of Alien Ant Farm. Actually, the whole song kinda sounds like them. Not a bad thing.

Nice work on the video. I'd be interested in reading a description of the process you used to get that many different shots all in sync. Did they just run all the way through the song over and over, while you ran around with the camera madly, or did you light different setups for various bits of the song, etc?

Nice energy from the band, and lively camera work to match. I rather liked the song as well.

Bryce,
Being a bit of a heavy rock fan myself....Song was great....Lead singers voice will in my opinion rival most top notch rock bands out there....Band's sound as a whole was flawless and sounded great, they got a good thing going there for sure....Launch them into the main stream immediatly - Best thing i liked ref the band was i could understand almost every word the singer sang which is quite unusual, usually, you just get a screaming racket !!

Now on to yourself & the vid....The filming of the video hits the spot smack on with the usual cutting from clip to clip around 20 times a second *LOL* i would rate the vid as up with the pro's without a doubt, you should be proud of yourself as should the band for their performance for you.

Although, as ive always wondered myself, i stand with axeman on this, how the hell do you co-ordinate such a fast moving/cutting vid with all that energy ?? The cut scene's of the guy on the bed etc is the easy bit cos you just think it, film it and decide where to put these cuts to allow the vid to tell the story...But, unless you got the studio lights set and about 50 fruit cake guy's on speed running around the set like loonies each with a camera on record !!!!!!

Come on bryce, throw us a bone here

Super job....Very well done.... +1 for a great vid but Rock fans can also use Visionlab and may also be interested in how music vid's are co-ordinated.

Very slick. Nicely done.

Only criticism is that the video doesn't really scale through the course of the song: it starts off with manic filming and editing, and stays pretty much the same throughout. It's really well done, but a gradual ratcheting up of the intensity (as happens in the song) would have made it even spiffier.

Good stuff though. Do you do this for a living?

You've certainly created great images on a technically really high level with this video. Light, framing, grading - all top notch!

Though I can't say I'm a big fan of the "let's film the band making music from lots of different angels, move the camera frantically and cut fast" approach in music video making, as creatively, that's probably the most obvious thing to do. Personally, I would have loved to see more shots like the corridor and bed eg would have loved to see a proper narrative or some creativity within all the technical play. But if that was the record labels concept, then that's that

But technically, this is definately very neat and you did a great job!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the 'band plays the song on a stage' type music videos either, but I gotta say that Bryce made it as interesting as it can be, especially given his limited budget. Best thing about the video is that it makes the band look completely pro and very cool, which in the end is the primary goal.

You already probably know what I think of your stuff, but I pretty much loved this.

It definitely got more filmic as it went along, I think, what with the angles in the narrative hotel room bit getting more interesting in terms of lighting/variety (at least, from what I could tell). Overall, I agree you might have wanted to film the 'band playing on a stage' perhaps in one more location to mix in, but usually that's just a crutch (I know I've used it!) to support weaker segments from the first location.

So it worked well, and aside from being technically proficient, the creativity in the visuals (lighting, camera jitter/shake - how much was post and how much was on-camera, btw?) were striking and artistic enough that it pulled the class of the video up overall. Excellent work!

Answers:

The performance stuff was shot using a doorway dolly and shoulder mounted. I had them run through the song about 15 times while I had crew adjust lighting to work around me. And yes, It was rather intense. But, you gotta do what you gotta do to shoot everything in one day.

I had to pump up the band each time, Because this stuff was shot early in the morning.

(as a sidenote) There was a whole bunch of 60p stuff shot I never ended up using, due to it just not fitting anywhere. But it looked incredible, I'll probably use it for my demo reel.

I don't do it "For a living" per say, but it's one of the many things I do. Although, It would be rather nice to stick with productions like this.

Quick update: This is now on MTV.com and VH1.com. It will be playing on MTV's "Headbanger's Ball" this Saturday night as well. Pretty excited about that, as I've heard it's difficult to get a music video on MTV these days.
