Why don't you try downloading the demo version here? Then you can try it out for yourself, answer your questions, and get a feel for the interface?

FYI- there are some tech specs here, but I don't think that they mention what you were looking for exactly.

In either version of Photokey, you can only have one layer of overlay. Altogether there are three layers possible: (1)the Background, (2)the Subject, and (3)the Overlay.

I can't find any overlay samples to try in the PhotoKey2 demo I downloaded. Where are they so I can search for them?

I created my own to test the feature: an overlay layer over a transparent background saved as a tiff. When I import it from my desktop into the overlay toolbar, it has a white background. How can I get rid of the white BG on the overlay that is transparent before it's imported?

I just did, on Ticket #GCM-185616. I am interested to find out what I'm doing wrong. Alex sent me directions on creating an overlay in Photoshop and what he said is what I had done to create the one that isn't working. The only thing I can think of is that I'm using a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6 (snow leopard) which is a new release that some programs need an update for.

I just sent over a response that I think will solve this for you. I suspect it was a Photoshop setting that was causing the problem.

Basically, you have to tell Photoshop to include transparency when you save a TIFF file, in the TIFF Options dialog box.
