What killer feature should we add to version 0.4?

Hi all,

Thank you all for your support of Action Pro and the development so far - it is making the process of building the software very exciting!

For the next update (0.4) I'll be working on a few small fixes, but I'm wondering what direction to take for a more significant feature.

Please let me know how you feel about the list below - if you could give them an order of importance then I'll get to work!

  • As someone not in the Apple ecosystem, owning a Vibe or using Ae, obviously I'd prefer multi-select. :) Since that's a basic workflow benefit to ALL users, that's my vote for firsties. 

    An .ma export is also useful for the Blender, 3DS MAX, Lightwave, C4D users as well, and I think DAZ can import .ma as well. The more formats you can export, the wider potential user base. This is my vote for second. 

    Ipad input... Perhaps getting that down gets you a step closer to Android. Either way it's an improvement over the mouse. This is my vote for third. (Consider the existence of wacom tablets, touch--stylus--enabled monitors, etc as well. I suspect the differences between tablets and PC/Mac touch displays are more than I think). Of course we've already discussed accelerometers. 

    Which is odd, since a full 3D controller with a headset is obviously the most powerful input method. Still, the smallest subset of users will have this hardware. So, fourth. Vive and related hardware arguably should take the most time anyways?

    -Using an iPad etc. as a control surface is very cool. That gets my vote for no.1.

    -Having the ability to export .ma files allows the software to stand on its own more, instead of being something that only is useful if you have HitFilm. As Triem pointed out, other software than After Effects has .ma import, so this would be very useful. My vote for no.2.

    -I don't have a HTC vive, but having the option to record in 3d in VR is pretty cool. No.3.

    -The ability to multi-select timeline objects... I mean it's extremely useful, but it's hardly a headline-grabbing new feature. No. 4.

    I will not comment on the others because this is the only one that stands out for me, the .ma exporter it would just be awesome. Action Pro animations to Blender... hmmm gravy. :)

    @JoshDaviesCEO - Hey Josh, I'd like to see a timer for the record button. I have a scene that's 34 seconds and I'd like to put a 3D model in a space of 30 seconds without having to adjust the speed of the layer to fit in that 30 secs. Right now when I record I count out loud as I'm recording the animation so I don't go over time. Surprisingly, I've been pretty close with 2 attempts but it would be a lot easier to see a timer count the seconds.
    Also, tool tips would be very helpful.  :)

    @JoshDaviesCEO - *Please take into consideration that I've never worked with a program like this before and I'm totally aware I may not know what I am talking about nor do I know the vision you have for the program.*

    After some long thought, which hurt by the way, I think it would be greatly helpful if a clip of a scene where one would like to use ActionPro could be imported and situated in the background so specific points in a video could be seen. That way if you need an object/effect to move from one point to another within the scene or bounce around hitting several different specific points, the user can see exactly where to draw the path. Does that make sense? The video clip brought in would only have to be a 2D plane that's placed in the background and used as a guide. As long as the ratios matched on export and integrated fully with HFP, it would be so easy to act something out and then add a 3D model that could be placed in the scene and look fully interactive with the subject.

    My one critique about Action Pro is, I've already run into a time issue. 30 secs is a great minimum but not the greatest maximum. Like the effects in HF when it first came out, they were 30 secs also, but now they go to a minute which is very helpful. I needed a fly to buzz around a scene that was 34 seconds long. I had the fly land on one person's forehead and used two 'flight paths' created in ActionPro which I used on each side of the brief "landing"; that way the fly could stay in the scene the entire time as the director wanted. But the fly also had to land on a specific point which is the reason for the comments in the previous paragraph. I ended up being able to move the path layer exported from ActionPro but not every situation would work by just moving the layer to get something to stop where you'd like.

    I realize ActionPro is still in Beta and there are probably a lot of other things the program will be able do. I look forward to seeing what those are!

  • Hello,  what about ACTION EXPRESS (beta). It could be powerfull (like hitfilm express) but not as powerfull as PRO. 

    What do you think?????

    @4KMax in principle I'd agree, but it's likely there won't be an "Express" version until after Josh passes 1.0. Especially as I think this is still Josh's personal code. 

    For future reference, I assume an "Express" version would be somewhat similar to Mocha Hitfilm. Most features but export limited to Hitfilm Only.

    0.4, 0.5 and 0.6 are now planned and underway with the first dropping very soon.

  • Granted, mentioned, but to give other context - Reference or monitoring capability relative to the video I will be using.in my composite. I will (when rotation becomes available) have 2 to 4 objects with their own rotation. Even if my reference track is just background, I can get one object, and dialogue as a reference to recording the rotation (and position) information, I allows sync to be a matter of seconds when I line it up rather than minutes of  moving around. I can be in sync as it plays, with dialogue recorded. Of course this isn't creating the composite, but when I import into my composite, offset the path/position points, it's a matter of tweaking the starting point of the rotation and position information.

    Good lord, this is a great idea! PLEASE get a rotation input method soon using either mouse translation or accelerometer via iPhone/iPad input. It solves 5 problems and creates many more options. I CAN'T WAIT for rotation input!!!!!
