I'm going to need quite a bit of help here


I literally just purchased the pro a few hours ago. So I opened it up, started to mess around using some clips I have saved, and I'm running into some issues already.

Right now, the main issue that is bugging me is slicing and moving clips. I trimmed a clip (probably a few seconds long) and I can't move it over to marry it up to another clip. Using the selector tool, I can't even select the clip as it is so small it has essentially vanished in the editing timeline...thing. When I move the mouse over the clip I only get these guys ----> {  }. 

Any advice? I know it's most likely user error and my inexperience. But honestly, I had a smoother editing experience when using iMovie. 


  • And is there any way to get a close-up of the clips I want to chop up and move around? everything is so small.

  • In the bottom left is a zoom slider between two icons of mountains.

    This is all pretty overwhelming. Not gonna lie. I will definitely check the videos out.

    One more quick question, since I am now dealing with another issue...is it possible to edit (color grading, contrast, brightness, etc.) multiple clips?  I have a particular "scene" trimmed and sliced up into various parts, and I want to get a consistent color. Right now it appears as though I can only drag the effects onto each slice individually, mess around with contrast, and hope I can replicate it in the following clip. Not only is it time consuming, but it is kind of irritating clicking and dragging the effect onto each clip.

  • Use a grade layer , set it up in one layer and copy it to those layers needed.

    In a Composite Shot one can add a Grade Layer at the top. Effects added to the Grade Layer apply to all lower layers. 

    In the Editor Timeline we don't have Grade Layers (Grades in the Editor are a very popular wishlist item), but you can select all effects from one clip, highlight the rest and paste them in one step.

    No need to apologize. Hitfilm is a complex program. Learning it will take time. I know we dumped a lot of video at you, but those videos should anticipate a lot of your future questions.

    i did not know that ,...awesome tip .  i was  nesting  Comps  to  do that ,...to apply an EFFECT  to multiple layers . Using the  Host  Comp  as  Parent , and applying and EFFECT to the  nest .

    That's why i'm  reading the  forums .

    the  built in  "Parent"  combo box  only works on  Transformations .  i was still wondering about  EFFECTS ...not anymore .

  • Well, unfortunately at the moment Hitfilm has no easy way to take multiple clips into a Composite Shot at once. That's a much requested Wishlist item (this reminds me, I need to type something up for the Wishlist). 

    For cutting and pasting effects, it's as simple as opening the first clip's Track Layer Properties, CTRL+left-clicking each desired effect then doing the standard CTRL+C to copy. 

    Then CTRL+click to select all the target clips, right-click and select Paste Properties. 

    Let me tag @humptylumpy for the rest of this. 

    Ok, a Grade Layer in a Composite Shot is a rendered version of all underlying layers. This is important for several reasons... First, applying effects to a Grade effectively applies those effects to all underlying layers. Second, many effects in Hitfilm have a "Source Layer" that can be selected. Now, in Hitfilm a Source Layer looks at the "raw" layer. This is a layer before any other effects are applied, so, a plane with Fractal Noise on it, if used as a Source Layer is... A plain plane. A Grade Layer used as a Source Layer is everything below the Grade without any effects on the Grade. Finally, when getting into 3D work, a Grade Layer separates 3D layers into batches.

    Let's say we have this layer setup. 

    • Light
    • Grade
    • 3D Plane
    • 3D Plane

    The Grade renders the 3D planes. This means they are not affected by the light. Now, if we go. 

    • Grade
    • Light
    • 3D Plane
    • 3D Plane

    The Planes are now lit. 

    It's a lot to take in, I know. VFX is a complex skill and Hitfilm is complex software, but keep with it and it will all become second nature.

    Humpty, nesting comps is another valid way to add effects to a cluster of layers. Whether to use a Grade or nest depends on the individual case. The advantage of a Grade is keeping everything in a single composite for ease of adjustment. The nested comp can be proxied for faster response. I mix and match depending on the project. 

  • thx , for the new tip . i heard , what Grade Layer was used for in these forums , but i didn't know what you just said ( about  Blocking\changing  the render order ) from what we "think" the stack should do . .  i do now .  . i had similar issues at first , with Vegas , cause i just didn't know .

    in Vegas  Documentation  , search for :

    "Video Signal Flow  Diagram"

    it has been there since like Vegas 5 .

    it shows the order that tracks  composite . that doc is the only reason i know how  Vegas  works , when working with stacks of tracks with  Parent\child  comping .  Diagrams , sometimes , are worth a ton of words

    does Hitfilm have a Doc.  like that ?  or just keep pumping us with  one-liners : ) .  i  take notes .

    there is a book  called  "C  Traps and Pitfalls"  .  mostly it is a book about things to be on the look out for when working with  C . it isn't about  bugs . What you just said above , is  a  "Trap and Pitfall" obscures workflow for new users .  That is some of the suff that  everyone needs to know about . i am sure there are tons more things like that .

    As for order of transform, masks, effects and such on a given layer. That is shown in the Controls panel. The order of the groups as listed is significant. Some layers, like text, have a different order.

  • I just selected the effects from a clip, clicked on other clips, and attempted to 'paste properties'.  

    There is no option to paste properties.

    These are the only options available...and the paste attributes are grayed out. 

    Currently, I am messing around with some video I took from around downtown the other day...a marina, the river, streets, people, etc. 

    I've only started with about three clips and already it's becoming tedious. I click on the clip after trimming it, select effects, then color correction, then brightness and contrast. Then I select the color balance effect. Then I select color grading, then whatever I want from there. Then I mess around and tweak the controls. And THEN, assuming I like what I see, I click on the next clip...and select effects, then color correction, then brightness and contrast, etc.

    You get the point. 

    Sometimes there are multiple clips from the same area, with the same light. So I'm clicking back and forth like a madman trying to match the controls so my edits don't look all jacked up and inconsistent. 

    Just about every tutorial I've watched on color correction/grading uses examples of a single shot, stuck on a cityscape, or landscape, or a single object like a flower or something. No action or panning shots, or multiple angles. I do appreciate the information, but it's frustrating for me trying to apply these techniques, as my camera is usually moving around a lot.
