If I have a first person video of me shooting a gun, how can I get the muzzle flash to go in front of the barrel?
You will need to add a mask to your muzzle flash layer(s) so that the flashes appear around the gun.
I also suggest adding a subtle glow on the muzzle each time a flash appears, as the gun will be lit from each flash. Just make a solid plane that matches your flash color, and mask it so you have a very highly feathered strip of light that matches the muzzle of the gun. You could either manually keyframe its position for each flash, or (depending on the quality of your footage) perhaps use tracking, though manual keyframing would probably be easiest.

I'd suggest you'd take a look at this tutorial the guys over at the Hitfilm channel made: https://youtu.be/RC5aJQ-8HI0
