I have a piece of footage which has very distinct colour bands, where I want it to have a smooth colour gradient.
Is there a way of correcting this within HitFilm?
To be clear, this is a piece of footage that I am importing into HitFilm.
A simple angle blur should do the trick. The only downside is that the Angle Blur effect has a length limit of 256 pixels. Depending on how far apart the bands are, you might need to stack several angle blur effects together.
I would also try a slight chroma blur. I do not know if it is possible in HitFilm, but I have done it in Resolve, which is free.
@AramM Hitfilm (Pro and Express) has a Chroma UV Blur effect.
JMcAllister the Chroma Blur is a better option than the Angle Blur @jsbarrett suggests. The Angle Blur effects everything while the Chroma Blur doesn't blur luminance values. This will help reduce color banding while better retaining edge detail.
