Not all PNGs are transparent- some have white or black backgrounds, so I'd like to know how to remove those.

Luminance Key is what you'll probably end up using.
Or, I know that this isn't in hitfilm, but most computers have word, and using their "remove background" tool is very easy and quite good. Located once you select the picture in the toolbar on top.
Well @Blackcatboy I never knew that feature was there.
Ahaha it's a bit strange, but it works for me.
Use a luminance key or a hue & RGB key.
