Pro gets 3D Models and particle simulation.(#TheExpressStruggleIsReal )
So how do we Express members make space scenes?
1. How do I create the inside-ship view of entering/exiting hyperspace with all the lines and all?
2. How do I create the shrink/grow effect that happens when you look at the ship from the outside as it pulls into and out of hyperspace?
Whatever it is, it has to be doable in 4 Express, because that's what I use.
1 use the hyperjump effect on one layer, get that how u want.
2. Get your cotpit view photo/picture and make sure it either uses An alpha channel for Windows or that they are blacked out. Then use the demult or luminance effect to make the windows see through. U need to make sure the layer it set to Blend add or Screen.
For 2, I meant when they zoom out of hyperspace, you know, where one second space is nice and empty then the next WHAM! IT'S THE REBEL FLEET!
Bulge Effect? Go from 0 > -3 >1 >0 with keyframes over about 1/4 of a second? Play with centre and radius to suit the entry point(s).
Oh and for external view play with scale that might be good enough
@Andy001z I was thinking that same thing... A little judicious key framing of the ship's x & y settings and opacity so it appears suddenly should work, I think. I mean start with the ship stretched long and 0 opacity and then in just a few key frames have it go to normal length starting with the back moving forward and the opacity at full, right?
Yeah something like that, remember it's going to be quick so is only a few frames.

I tried an exit jump with a mask and opacity the grew over 8 frames @24fps but it just looked like it popped in. BooEven though I have personally never exited from a hyper jump I would expect that I would see ships, planet, moons, etc on the horizon of the jump plane just before exiting.. but hey....what do I know :-)

Now, since this is about effects, I would put it in the Techniques sub, but this was more general.
But on to the question. What effects could us Express users, WITHOUT ADD-ONS, PARTICLE SIMULATORS OR 3D MODELS recreate from Rogue One? Excluding anything that was covered in the Rebellion tutorials.
Whoops, It IS in the Techniques sub. But what effects and how could we make them?
BTW probably a lot of people are gonna say there are few (ahem, you know who you are), but I'm nonetheless interested because I love that film.
Also another question y'all can answer:
How did Director Edwards use an iPad and a VIVE CONTROLLER as a virtual camera? Any suggestions as to how we could do that?

Finally, to add 3D model animation capability to After Effects, and a Particle Sim as good as Hitfilm's to After Effects would require plug ins that cost a lot more than Hitfilm Pro--besides having to rent AE in the first place. We get it--you want free 3D models in Express. It will never happen. Learn to maximize the tools you have available. There are other options. You want 3D models? Blender is free, go learn that, then learn how to import and Composite 2D layers.
If I'M tired of hearing it, then I guarantee a lot of others are as well.
Oh, for Entering Hyperspace, Star Wars style, use the procedures for generating starfields in the tutorials above, then add zoom blur, and maybe curves to boost the brights as the zoom blur stretches out. That's it.
For the look of the Hyperspace tunnel, create a blue fractal noise moving straight down the screen. Add Polar Warp. Twiddle a bit. Add glows. Add another black plane on top and use masks to cut out a circle to ve where the center of the tunnels falls to black.

There are at least four ways to make lasers and lightsabers in Express. One is lightning and all the others have existing tutorials on YouTube.
For spaceships, well, believe it or not a lot of 60's-90's movies and TV shows actually used 2D images of spaceships and planets. Or shoot a real model on a greenscreen like the first three movies. Or go learn Blender.
For matchmoving, hey, Blender does that! So does autodesk matchmover, which is free and exports the .ma files Hitfilm can import.

There are plenty of tutorials for screen replacement in Express.
There are plenty of tutorials on 3D matte painting in Express.
In short, you can build almost every single effect in Rogue One in Hitfilm without 3D models and Particle sims.
Ah, the days when Simon was working with HitFilm. He has been gone for awhile now.
@JoshDaviesCEO is currently experimenting with using a Vive controller in Hitfilm. He may comment now, or wait until it's worked out and then do a tutorial.
Short form--someone wrote software. Whether a joystick, mouse, paddle, wheel, Steam Controller (Simon Jones did a tutorial on that one) or a VIVE, it's all a device that provides basic numeric data. Any competent coder (i.e. Not me) should be able to write simple code to take those numbers and plug them into the compositing software. Interfacing with Hitfilm would require either dev code (for Express), or could be written as an OpenFx framework for Pro. Or code that takes external data and converts it to a Composite Shot (stand alone, but viable for Express and Pro).
As for the other question on what effects other than the Rebellion tutorial could be created from Rogue One, @Triem23
@Fulcrum2016 You might find this interesting... they explain what the iPad/VIVE setup was actually used for... or maybe you already know. (In which case this is maybe more interesting for others?)
I did watch that. I just wanted to know if there's a similar set-up that could be accomplished at home (you could use a bluetooth-connected Nintendo Switch, which Windows recognizes). But what about the other question this whole thread's title is about?

No, you asked about entering and exiting, not being in hyperspace.
I've done this one (it's in the opening shot of DOWNFALL). The way I did it is to keyframe the ship's position and scale such that it moves really far over a really short period of time. (Depending on how far away from the camera the ship's original position is, you may be able to get away with just key framing the world transform. I had to use scale as well.)
Basically, you need to have the keyframes about three to four frames apart.
Now, that's assuming you're using 3D models, which means doing the effect in Express is Right Out. In that case, you'll need to keyframe the scale of the entire layer. 0 to 100% over the course of about four frames should do it. A little motion blur on the shot couldn't hurt, either.
You need to apply some thought process yourself, what do I want to make and how can I do that. Or if you are set on starting with the effect, pick a cool effect in Express and build your story around that. What I did with my https://youtu.be/LG6cU3MLuDk , I liked the light sword and knew I could make it look liek the beams from the Death Star, pretty much I think it was doable in HF Express. Most of it is using picture assest and sound.
I miss Simon...his Iron Man HUD was the first Hitfilm project I ever did.
