    Dude. Dude! Dude, seriously?! Using a standard plane as a Set Matte Alpha keys the edge as you move the layer?! I mean, of course, obviously, but, >fertilizer<, man, I can't believe I hadn't thought of that! That's the ultimate power tip for hard edged wipes!

    Oh, Bevels are timeless. You watch--they'll be back. Except the next design trend will probably be all curves. 

  • Mask on a Grade Layer does a similar job to Set Matte on a plane. Only works for one 'thing' but embedded in separate comps means you can combine multiples in another one.
