Well, this is a fairly simple trick if you have the right software. I did it myself in about 60 seconds.
First, you need two clips, one for each character. (make sure that the camera doesn't move in between the two shots)
Load both into your special FX software (in this case, Commotion).
Make a composite of one of the clips. (Composite-->Make Composite)
Use the rotospline tool (with feather of 1 or 2) to make a box that extends from the edge of the screen to somewhere in between the two characters.
Drag the second clip under the first one.
Render the composite.
Make sure you edit the timing right. More complicated things are going to require more complicated rotospline manipulation.
