I agree completely. Penguin and I have also relied a bit too heavily on voiceovers in past films and have had to learn this lesson the hard way. (Our upcoming film, Into The Woods will be the first of our serious movies to not use any voiceover and have very minimal dialog, so we'll see how that comes out.

One issue with voiceovers, I think, is that they tend to force the audience into one specific reading of the film. The voiceover basically says this is how it is. The most the interesting films are always the ones that leave a few things open to interpretation - not necessarily in a "what the hell happened there?" kinda way, but in terms of the moral, or the theme, or the big question. Make your statement by all means, but also let the audience form their own thoughts. The film will be all the more memorable for making them think, rather than talking at them.
